ERP implementations have a bad reputation for going over budget and over schedule, but the projects that go wrong usually skip the same handful of steps. Here's the checklist we run through on every implementation, regardless of which platform is involved.
1. Audit Your Current Data Before Migration
Migrating messy data into a new system just gives you a new system full of messy data. Before migration starts, audit what's actually in your current system — duplicate records, outdated fields, and inconsistent formatting are all cheaper to fix before the move than after.
2. Map Every Integration Your Business Depends On
List every tool that currently talks to your old system — accounting software, e-commerce platforms, shipping tools — and confirm each one has a path to connect to the new ERP before go-live, not after.
3. Build a Realistic Training Plan, Not Just a Training Day
A single training session before launch rarely sticks. Plan for role-specific training closer to go-live, a reference guide staff can return to, and a point person for questions during the first few weeks.
4. Run a Parallel Period Before Full Cutover
Running the old and new systems side by side for a short period — even just a week — catches data and process gaps while there's still a safety net, instead of discovering them after the old system is turned off.
5. Plan the Rollback Before You Need It
Every migration plan should include a documented path back to the previous system. You likely won't need it, but having it defined in advance turns a potential emergency into a manageable decision.
